About'Tango-kenchu'
The silk textiles industry of the Tango region has an ancient history, tracing its beginnings back to over 1,300 years ago. It was said that silk goods woven in the city of Kyotango in the Nara period were gifted to Emperor Shomu in the year 739; from this, we can see just how long such goods have been made in the region. Incidentally, said silk goods are, to this day, under careful care as an item of importance at Shosoin—a treasure house located in Todai-ji in Nara. The beginning of ‘chirimen,’ or crepe textiles from Tango, can be traced to roughly 300 years ago, from 1720 in the Edo period. The silk traders Saheiji Kinuya and others brought home to Tango with them the techniques they learned from Kyoto’s Nishijin region, and ‘chirimen’ textiles were born based on such methods and techniques. From that point on, the production of silk textiles became widely established in Tango as a traditional industry, and maintains that position even in the present. Silk is a fabric that is sensitive to changes to temperature and humidity, with an ability to absorb and diffuse moisture. The air layer that exists between the fibers produces an insulator effect, and seeing as the fiber’s heat conductivity is more diminished than that of any other fibers, it acts superbly in its ability to maintain warmth. Wearing silk provides for a cooler sensation in the summer time, while acting as a warm material during the cold of winter; the material provides for a comfortable feel, no matter what time of year that you wear it. What is more is that silk is composed of the same proteins (18 variants of amino acids) as humans, meaning one could say it is a material with outstanding affinity with the characteristics of our skin. Silk threads are fibers that are created from taking fibers from the cocoon of the silkworm. Silkworms create cocoons along the process of their growth to protect themselves from ultraviolet rays, a great enemy of theirs. Such cocoons are said to absorb UV rays, which is where silk’s ability to easily absorb ultraviolet rays comes from. In tandem with this quality, silk is known for possessing other properties, such as its deodorizing effect and its ability resist bacteria; overall, silk is a material that brings a variety of fantastic qualities into union.

Where It’s Made
Ooe Co., Ltd.
Established in Showa era year 43 (1968). Kyoto’s Tango region, as known for its Tango ‘chirimen’ or crepe weaving, possesses much of value in terms of Japanese-style garment textiles. Although Ooe was originally involved in the trade to the order-made production of kimonos as well as the yarn trade, they quickly changed their direction to the production of wide-set textiles due to promises of demand for western style clothing. At present day, they continue the wholesale manufacturing of fabrics for a variety of western-style garments. Although Ooe itself possesses a weaving center within its own plant, they also often engage in the practice of making requests to the many weavers located in many homes throughout the Tango region, known as ‘debata’ and ‘chinbata.’ Under the instruction of Ooe, these textiles are created by these ‘debata’weavers; they possess a partnership with Ooe that spans across nearly 30 years.

Recommended Usage
Although the fabric itself possesses the multi-functionality of silk, the feel of the material is no different from the texture of cotton. Whether it be for shawls or pajamas, we recommend use of this fabric for items that are worn directly on the skin.
